Gus Mortson Autographs
Gus Mortson was a Canadian hockey player born on January 24, 1925, in New Liskeard, Ontario. He began his professional hockey career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1946-47 season, and in his second year, Mortson proved to be a valuable addition to the team's defense. He quickly developed a reputation as a tough, rugged defensemen who was unafraid to throw his weight around. Throughout his career, Mortson played a total of 804 games, scoring 49 goals and 156 assists, proving himself to be one of the most reliable defensemen of his time.
With his fierce playing style, Mortson was an integral part of the Toronto Maple Leafs' team that won the Stanley Cup four times during the 1940s and 1950s. He became known for his ability to anticipate plays and make effective passes, leading him to become on of the best defensemen of his era. Mortson was also known for his physical presence on the ice, and his willingness to fight earned him the nickname of "Old Hardrock."
In addition to his career with the Maple Leafs, Mortson played short stints with the Chicago Black Hawks, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Montreal Canadiens. He retired from professional hockey in 1958, after a 12-year career. In 1998, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, recognized for his contributions to the game and his outstanding career as a defenseman. Mortson passed away in 2015, but his legacy continues to live on as one of the most feared defensemen to ever lace up a pair of skates.
