Gus Mortson was a Canadian hockey player born on January 24, 1925, in New Liskeard, Ontario. He began his professional hockey career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1946-47 season, and in his second year, Mortson proved to be a valuable addition to the team's defense. He quickly developed a reputation as a tough, rugged defensemen who was unafraid to throw his weight around. In addition to his career with the Maple Leafs, Mortson played short stints with the Chicago Black Hawks, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Montreal Canadiens. He retired from professional hockey in 1958, after a 12-year career. In 1998, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, recognized for his contributions to the game and his outstanding career as a defenseman.
