Bouwmeester spent most of his career with the Florida Panthers, Calgary Flames, and the St. Louis Blues, and represented Canada internationally winning multiple gold medals. Bouwmeester started his professional hockey career with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1999. He was drafted third overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He played 471 games for the Panthers and was known for his strong skating, good shot, and ability to control the play.
