Jim Benning is a former professional ice hockey player who has been a part of the sport for over 35 years. Born on April 29, 1963 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Benning played his youth hockey in Alberta before being drafted to the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1980. After playing four seasons with Portland, Benning was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. After retiring from playing, Benning transitioned into hockey management, working as a scout for the Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, and the Boston Bruins. In 2014, Benning was hired as the General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks. As GM, Benning has made multiple moves to rebuild the team, including drafting high-profile players such as Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, and trading for stars like J.T. Miller and Nate Schmidt.
