Jim Rutherford is a former professional hockey player and current general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Born on February 17, 1949, in Beeton, Ontario, Rutherford began his playing career with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1969-70 season. He also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Los Angeles Kings before retiring in 1983. After his playing career, Rutherford turned to management, becoming general manager for the Hartford Whalers in 1994. He stayed with the organization when it moved to become the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997 and remained their general manager until 2014. During his tenure, he guided the Hurricanes to their first-ever Stanley Cup championship in 2006.
