Jody Shelley was a Canadian professional ice hockey player born on February 7, 1976, in Thompson, Manitoba. Initially, he played left winger for the Broadview Hawks and later joined the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. In the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, he was picked up as the fifteenth round, 286th overall pick by the Calgary Flames. He played for the Flames in 2 games with no points to his name before moving to Columbus Blue Jackets, a team he played for most of his career. With 581 career NHL games to his name, Shelley retired in 2013 after a prolonged career with several teams across Canada and the United States. He featured for several teams such as the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, and the Philadelphia Flyers, among others. Shelley is considered a fan favourite in Columbus, where he spent the bulk of his NHL career. During this period, fans appreciated his grit, toughness, and willingness to stand up for his teammates. He is also the team's all-time leader in penalty minutes and is consistently ranked one of the best enforcers of his era.

After retiring from his career as an enforcer, Jody Shelley took several roles in hockey, including being a television analyst for the Blue Jackets, working as the assistant to the general manager in the San Jose Sharks, and now working as a community ambassador for the Flyers. Shelley dedicated his career to helping those less fortunate through various charitable organizations, including the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer program.
