Mullen spent the first five years of his NHL career playing for the Blues, where he was a consistent scorer and effective penalty killer. In 1982, he was traded to the Calgary Flames, where he became a key player and helped the team advance to the Stanley Cup finals in his first season with the team.
Mullen's hockey career continued to thrive when he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990. In 1991, he recorded his third 40-goal season and helped lead the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup that year. They would also win the Cup the following year, making Mullen a three-time Stanley Cup champion. He continued to play for the Penguins until 1995, and then played for the Boston Bruins and the Dallas Stars before retiring in 1997.
