John Ferguson

John Ferguson was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and executive. He was born on July 5, 1938, in Vancouver, British Columbia. During his playing career, he played as a left-winger for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and the Minnesota North Stars. He won five Stanley Cups with the Canadiens in 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, and 1971, and he was a key figure in the team's success during that period. In 1968, he was named the NHL's Best Left Wing, and in 1971, he won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. More about John Ferguson

After he retired, Ferguson became a coach and management executive in the NHL. He began his management career with the New York Rangers in 1976 before moving to the Winnipeg Jets as their general manager in 1978. He guided the Jets to the playoffs in three of his four seasons with the team, including a trip to the Smythe Division finals in 1982. In 1983, he was appointed as the president and general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, the team he had won five Stanley Cups with as a player. During his tenure as the Canadiens' executive, the team won two more Stanley Cups in 1986 and 1993.

Throughout his career, John Ferguson was known for his toughness and physicality. He was an excellent fighter and was never afraid to defend his teammates. He was also praised for his leadership abilities both on and off the ice. In 2019, he was posthumously inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the game of hockey in Canada.
