John Wensink Autographs
John Wensink was a professional ice hockey player who played left wing for nine seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on May 12, 1953, in Cornwall, Ontario, Wensink began his career playing junior hockey for the Cornwall Royals of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 1971. During his junior career, he posted 81 goals and 101 assists in 163 games.
Wensink made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins during the 1973-74 season. He played with the team for three seasons and became known for his physical style of play. In the 1977-78 season, Wensink was traded to the Colorado Rockies, where he played until the 1980-81 season. During his time in Colorado, Wensink scored a career-high 26 goals and 32 assists during the 1978-79 season. After a brief stint with the New York Rangers, Wensink retired from the NHL at the age of 29.
Wensink’s legacy in the NHL is remembered for his infamous brawl with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978. After a hard check on Wensink by North Stars player Alex Pirus, Wensink retaliated and instigated a bench-clearing brawl. The incident resulted in multiple fines and suspensions for both teams. Wensink’s enforcer-style of play earned him the nickname “The Sheriff” and he is still remembered as one of the toughest players of his era.
