Hendry was originally a left-wing player before transitioning into a defenseman in junior ice hockey. Hendry’s professional career began in the 2006-07 season when he joined the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL), the main farm team of the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). In the following year, he got his NHL debut with the Blackhawks and played 40 games for the team. He was known for his skating ability, fluid puck-movement, and strong two-way play. Hendry remained with the Blackhawk organization for the next few seasons, playing primarily as a depth defenseman but proving to be effective when called upon.
