Subban played with the Belleville Bulls in the OHL from 2011-2015, where he proved himself to be one of the top defensemen in the league. During his time in Belleville, he was named OHL Second-Team All-Star twice and OHL Third-Team All-Star once. In 2015, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks, but he only played with their American Hockey League affiliate team, the Utica Comets, for the next three seasons.

In 2018, Subban was traded to the Los Angeles Kings and played for their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. In 2019, he signed with the Toronto Marlies, but due to the pandemic, the 2020 AHL season was canceled. Subban faced some challenges in his hockey career, such as being the only black player on many of the teams he played for, which he says brought more focus on him.
