Ken Schinkel Autographs
Ken Schinkel was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who was born on October 13, 1932, in Jansen, Saskatchewan. He began playing minor league hockey in the early 1950s for the Spokane Flyers of the Western Hockey League. Schinkel was a talented forward with a great work ethic and a keen sense of the game. This combination of skills earned him a spot on the roster of the New York Rangers in the 1958-59 season, where he would spend the majority of his career.
Schinkel played for the Rangers as a left winger for 11 seasons, becoming one of the team's most prolific scorers. He scored a total of 124 goals and 156 assists in 594 games, and he was a key player in the team's march to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1972. Schinkel was also known for his toughness and his ability to play through injuries. He was one of the few players to make it through the entire Original Six era and the NHL expansion, retiring in 1974 at the age of 42.
After retiring from playing, Schinkel joined the coaching ranks as an assistant with the Washington Capitals before becoming the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1977. He led the Penguins to the playoffs in his first year and earned the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's Coach of the Year. His coaching career spanned 10 seasons, during which he coached the Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Hartford Whalers. Despite his success as a coach, Schinkel is still best remembered for his contributions as a player and his unwavering dedication to the game of hockey.
