Lanny McDonald is a former professional ice hockey player from Canada who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 16 seasons. He was born on February 16, 1953, in Hanna, Alberta, and grew up playing hockey in small-town Alberta before making his NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1973. McDonald played for the Maple Leafs for seven seasons before being traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979, where he played for two seasons. After the Rockies relocated to New Jersey, McDonald was traded again, and he played for the Calgary Flames for the final nine seasons of his career. More about Lanny McDonald

McDonald was a prolific scorer during his NHL career, scoring more than 500 career goals and nearly 1,000 career points. He was known for his hard work, strong skating ability, and his signature bushy mustache. McDonald was a member of the Maple Leafs team that made it to the Stanley Cup finals in 1978 but ultimately lost to the Montreal Canadiens. He won his only Stanley Cup championship in 1989 with the Calgary Flames, where he served as the team captain. McDonald retired from professional hockey in 1989 at the age of 36 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.

After his playing career, McDonald remained involved in the hockey world as a broadcaster, commentator, and executive. In 1993, he became the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, a post he held for four years. He also served as the Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame from 1998 to 2000.
