Larry Kwong Autographs
Larry Kwong was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was born on June 17, 1923, in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. Kwong was of Chinese descent, and he became the first player of Asian heritage to play in the NHL. He played for the New York Rangers in 1948, and in his debut match, he played for a minute and twenty seconds. Despite not having much ice time, Kwong's appearance in the NHL broke the racial barrier in the league.
Before joining the NHL, Kwong had a successful junior hockey career, playing for the Trail Smoke Eaters. In 1940, he helped the team win the Memorial Cup, which is the highest honor for junior ice hockey in Canada. After his junior career, he played senior hockey for the Nanaimo Clippers, where he was noticed by the New York Rangers' scouts. His speed, agility, and resilience on the ice made him an attractive prospect for the Rangers, who signed him up in 1948.
After playing for the Rangers, Kwong continued to play professional ice hockey in various leagues, including the Quebec Senior Hockey League, the Pacific Coast Hockey League, and the Western Hockey League. He retired from professional ice hockey in 1958, and in 2013, Kwong was honored by the Canadian government with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for breaking down barriers in sports. Kwong's contribution to hockey paved the way for Asian and minority players, inspiring many to follow in his footsteps.
