Murphy started his professional hockey career in 1980 with the Los Angeles Kings, playing as a defenseman. He spent five seasons with the Kings before he was traded to the Washington Capitals in 1984. He played for the Capitals for three seasons and then moved to the Minnesota North Stars, where he spent only a year. However, almost two years into his stint with the North Stars, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where his career took off.
