In 2007, Eller was drafted 13th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the NHL Entry Draft. He then moved to North America to hone his skills further and joined the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League (AHL). Eller made his NHL debut in 2009 with the Blues and remained with the team until 2016. During his stint with the Blues, he scored 45 goals and had 62 assists in 286 games, while also establishing himself as a reliable two-way player. In 2016, Eller was traded to the Washington Capitals, where he played a crucial role in the team's 2018 Stanley Cup championship victory.

Eller has also been a vital player for the Danish national team, representing his country in several international tournaments, including the Winter Olympics. He has won several awards and accolades throughout his career, including being named the tournament's most valuable player at the 2015 IIHF World Championship.
