Eaton started his basketball career playing for Cypress Junior College for two years. He then transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he continued to hone his skills. Eaton was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the fourth round of the 1982 NBA draft but was quickly traded to the Utah Jazz, where he would play for the entirety of his career. At the Jazz, Eaton became the NBA's most dominant defensive center, winning the Defensive Player of the Year award two times, leading the league in blocks four times, and making the NBA All-Defensive Team five times. Eaton also set the record for the most blocked shots in a single season with 456, which is still the record as of today.

After a successful career, Mark Eaton retired from basketball in 1993. Despite never winning an NBA championship, Eaton's defensive prowess and impact on the court made him known as one of the most influential players in Jazz history. Eaton continued to be involved in basketball even after his playing career ended. He became an entrepreneur, a motivational speaker, and a radio broadcaster covering the Utah Jazz games. Sadly, Eaton passed away on May 28, 2021, in a bike accident in Park City, Utah, leaving behind a legacy as one of the NBA's greatest defensive centers of all time.
