In 1980, Pavelich was chosen to represent his country by playing for the US Olympic Men's Hockey Team. The team participated in the famous 'Miracle on Ice' Olympics in Lake Placid, where they defeated the heavily favored Soviet team to advance to the finals. They went on to beat Finland in the finals to clinch the gold medal. Pavelich was a vital cog in the American team's success and played a significant role in scoring key goals in the victory against the Soviet Union.

After the Olympics, Pavelich went on to play in the NHL for ten seasons, representing the New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, and San Jose Sharks. Although he was never a major scorer in the NHL, his work ethic and determination on the ice made him a valuable asset to his teams. Pavelich retired from professional hockey in 1992 with a total of 137 goals and 192 assists in 355 NHL games. Pavelich's contribution to the 'Miracle on Ice' team will always remain an essential milestone in American sports history, and his name will forever be etched in the annals of American hockey.
