Martin Straka is a former Czech professional hockey player who was born on June 3, 1972, in Plzen, Czechoslovakia. Straka began his professional hockey career in the Czech Extraliga with HC Plzen where he spent two seasons before making his National Hockey League (NHL) debut in 1992 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He quickly established himself as an important player for the Penguins and played for the team until 1995 before being traded to the Ottawa Senators.
Straka's NHL career was characterized by his offensive skills and his versatility as a player. He was a gifted skater who could play multiple positions, including center and winger, and was a reliable scorer. Throughout his NHL career, Straka played for various teams, including the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, and the Dallas Stars, and helped lead the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2006. Straka concluded his professional hockey career in the Czech Extraliga after the 2013-14 season and had accumulated 257 goals and 460 assists for a total of 717 points in 954 NHL games.
Straka was also a key member of the Czech Republic national team during international competitions, including the Olympics and the World Championships. He won a bronze medal at the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998 and a gold medal at the World Championships in 2005. Straka has since retired from professional hockey and currently works as an assistant coach for HC Plzen. He remains one of the most decorated Czech hockey players and is remembered for his dynamic offensive talent, versatility, and strong work ethic both on and off the ice.
