Marty McSorley is a former Canadian ice hockey player known for his aggressive play on the ice. He was born on May 18, 1963, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. McSorley played professional hockey for over 16 years, spending most of his career in the National Hockey League (NHL). Over his career, McSorley played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers, and the Los Angeles Kings.
McSorley's reputation as a tough enforcer was established while playing for the Edmonton Oilers, especially during the 1987-1988 season when he recorded 399 penalty minutes, making him one of the most penalized players in the league. McSorley's aggressive play often landed him in fights and violent altercations on the ice. However, his aggressiveness also worked to his advantage, helping him gain a reputation as a skilled and talented defenseman. He won two Stanley Cup championships with the Edmonton Oilers in 1987 and 1988 and one with the Los Angeles Kings in 1993.
Despite his success, McSorley's career was also marred by controversy. The most significant incident occurred in 2000 when he struck Vancouver Canuck's forward Donald Brashear with his stick in the back of his head. The attack left Brashear with a concussion, and McSorley was suspended for the rest of the season. This incident marked the end of McSorley's career in the NHL with a total of 1,452 penalty minutes. Today, Marty McSorley is remembered as one of the toughest enforcers in NHL history.
