Mathew Barzal is a Canadian professional ice hockey center who currently plays for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was born on May 26, 1997, in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. Barzal grew up in a family of hockey enthusiasts, and from a young age, he began playing minor hockey in his hometown. Barzal was drafted in the first round, 16th overall, by the New York Islanders in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He was initially sent back to his junior team, the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he had an outstanding 2016-17 season. Barzal led the WHL in scoring, won the WHL Playoff MVP, and helped his team win the WHL Championship before being awarded the CHL Player of the Year award. He made his NHL debut in the following season and quickly established himself as a top player.
