He began his hockey career by playing for the Blaine High School team, where he earned All-State honors in both his junior and senior years. He then went on to play college hockey for St. Cloud State University, where he was a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) and earned a reputation as a reliable two-way forward. After his college career, Hendricks signed with the American Hockey League (AHL) team Milwaukee Admirals, but he was soon called up to the NHL by the Colorado Avalanche in 2008. He played 56 games in his rookie season, but it wasn't until he joined the Washington Capitals in 2010 that he established himself as a valuable NHL player. Hendricks was known for his physical play, energy, and leadership skills, and quickly became a fan favorite in Washington. He played for the Capitals for three seasons before moving on to play for the Nashville Predators, Edmonton Oilers, and Winnipeg Jets.

Throughout his NHL career, Hendricks played in 601 games, scoring 54 goals and 70 assists. He was also known for his toughness and willingness to fight for his teammates, as well as his ability to play on the penalty kill and in defensive situations. After retiring from professional hockey in 2020, Hendricks returned to Minnesota with his family and began working as a youth hockey instructor and coach, passing on his love and knowledge of the game to the next generation of players.
