Mike Gartner was a Canadian ice hockey player born on October 29, 1959, in Ottawa, Ontario. He began his professional career in 1978 after being drafted fourth overall by the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft. Gartner played 19 seasons in the NHL and was known for his exceptional speed and consistency. He played for five different teams during his career, including the Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Phoenix Coyotes.
Gartner's hockey career was filled with notable accomplishments. He amassed a career total of 708 goals and 627 assists in 1,432 games. Gartner was named to the NHL All-Star team seven times and won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and excellence on the ice in 1994. Gartner was also a member of the Canadian national team, representing his country in two Canada Cup tournaments and the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
In 2001, Gartner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, cementing his place in NHL history. In 2017, he was also inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. Gartner is known not only for his accomplishments on the ice but also for his work off the ice, including his commitment to charitable causes.
