He played as a defenseman in the National Hockey League (NHL) for a total of 337 games across ten seasons, playing with various teams, including the Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and the Boston Bruins. Mottau started his hockey career at Boston College, where he played four seasons from 1996 to 2000. He had an outstanding college career, ending his senior season as the winner of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given annually to the top college hockey player in the country.
After college, Mottau signed with the New York Rangers, where he played parts of his first two seasons before being traded to the Calgary Flames. He played in only nine games with the Flames before being traded again, this time to the Anaheim Ducks, where he played in nine games with the team. In 2002, he signed with the New Jersey Devils, where he played for four seasons, starting as a spare defenseman before finally earning his way to the team's starting lineup. He played a key role in the team's run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003, ultimately losing to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
