He grew up in Ohio and played high school hockey for DeSales High School, leading them to a state championship in 1998. Rupp's hockey career began in 2000 when he was drafted by the New York Islanders in the first round, 9th overall. He played for the team for two seasons before being traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Throughout his time in the NHL, Rupp played for several teams, including the Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, and New Jersey Devils. He was known for his tough, physical style of play and was a valuable asset to his teams.

Rupp's most memorable hockey moment came in the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals when he scored the game-winning goal for the Devils in Game 7 against the Anaheim Ducks. He retired in 2015 with 65 goals and 48 assists in 623 career NHL games. After his retirement, Rupp worked as a hockey analyst for the NHL Network and continues to be involved in the sport through various coaching and mentorship programs.
