Mike Smith, born in Roswell, New Mexico in 1965, is one of the most accomplished jockeys in thoroughbred horse racing. He has a career spanning over three decades, and his record speaks for itself - over 5,000 victories, multiple Breeders’ Cup wins, and in 2018, he became the oldest jockey to win the prestigious Kentucky Derby.
Smith’s career began in 1982, when he began riding professionally at age 16. His talent was immediately noticed, and he quickly made a name for himself as a top jockey on the West Coast. One of his most impressive achievements was winning the 1993 Preakness Stakes aboard Prairie Bayou – a horse he had never ridden before.
