Mike Sullivan Autographs
Mike Sullivan is an American former professional ice hockey player and current head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Born on February 27, 1968, Sullivan grew up in Marshfield, Massachusetts, and started his hockey career in his local youth leagues. In 1987, he was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fourth round, 69th overall. Sullivan played four seasons at Boston University (BU) from 1987 to 1991 and was an integral part of the team that won the NCAA championship in 1991. Following college, Sullivan played professionally for ten years, mostly in the minor leagues such as the International Hockey League (IHL) and American Hockey League (AHL).
Sullivan's coaching career began in 2002 when he served as an assistant coach for the AHL's Providence Bruins. In 2003, he was promoted to head coach and led the team to the AHL Finals for the first time in ten years. Sullivan then went on to coach the Boston Bruins as an assistant coach for two seasons from 2003 to 2006 before becoming the head coach of the AHL's Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Penguins in 2007. In 2009, Sullivan led the team to the Calder Cup championship, and the following year, he was selected to coach the AHL All-Star Game.
In 2015, Sullivan was named the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins' AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Penguins were struggling at the time and were last in their division. However, Sullivan managed to turn the team around, and they finished first in their division. His success at the AHL level earned him a promotion to the NHL team as the head coach in 2015. In his first season with the Penguins, Sullivan led them to the Stanley Cup championship, becoming only the sixth coach in NHL history to win the Cup in his first season as a head coach. Sullivan's success continued in the 2016-17 season, as he led the Penguins to their second consecutive Cup win. Overall, Sullivan has a remarkable record as a coach, having won four championships at the AHL and NHL levels combined.
