Mike Vernon is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on February 24, 1963, in Calgary, Alberta, Vernon started his hockey career in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Calgary Wranglers in 1981. Vernon was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round (56th overall) of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Flames in the 1982-83 season and played eight seasons with them. Vernon won two Stanley Cup championships in his career, one with the Flames in 1989 and the other with the Detroit Red Wings in 1997. He was also a two-time winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player of the playoffs.
