Milt Schmidt Autographs
Milt Schmidt was a Canadian ice hockey player who played in the NHL for the Boston Bruins for 16 seasons between 1936 and 1955. He was born on March 5, 1918, in Kitchener, Ontario, and began his ice hockey career with the Kitchener Greenshirts before joining the Bruins organization. Schmidt was known for his skillful skating, excellent vision, and his ability to set up plays for his teammates.
Schmidt was a successful forward during his time with the Bruins. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the team, in 1939 and 1941, and was part of the famous "Kraut Line" along with Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer. In the 1940 season, Schmidt scored an impressive 22 goals and led the league with 30 assists, earning him the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. He retired in 1955, with a total of 229 goals and 346 assists in 776 games, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.
After his playing career was over, Schmidt went on to become the general manager of the Bruins for 11 years between 1967 and 1978. He played a crucial role in acquiring players such as Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito, which led to the Bruins' success in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In addition to his accomplishments as a player and manager, Schmidt was also credited with helping to break down the barriers that prevented black players from joining the NHL, by signing Willie O'Ree to the Bruins in 1958. Schmidt passed away on January 4, 2017, at the age of 98, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest players and managers in NHL history.
