Rielly’s junior career began in 2010-11 with Moose Jaw, and he quickly established himself as a top defenseman. After his 2012-13 season, in which he scored 54 points in 60 games, Rielly was drafted fifth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in January 2013 and quickly showed the skills that had made him a top prospect. Rielly’s skating, playmaking ability, and instincts on the ice led to significant success in his first full season, with his rookie campaign drawing comparisons to NHL legends like Bobby Orr and Brian Leetch.
