He joined the Green Bay Gambler of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in the 2013-2014 season, where he played 55 games and scored 52 points. In the 2015-2016 season, Schmaltz played for the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks, where he won the NCAA championship. He then joined the Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate, where he played 12 games and scored 7 points. The following season, he made his NHL debut for the Blackhawks and played 61 games, contributing 28 points. In his third season with the Blackhawks, Schmaltz started strong with 18 points in 23 games but suffered a season-ending injury in November 2018.

After three seasons with the Blackhawks, Schmaltz was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in November 2018, where he signed a seven-year contract extension. In his debut with the Coyotes, he scored the game-winning goal against the Los Angeles Kings. Schmaltz continued to play well for the Coyotes, contributing 45 points in 70 games during the 2019-2020 season. He also played a crucial role in helping the Coyotes reach the qualifying round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2020, scoring three points in four games.
