LaFontaine's hockey career spanned from 1983 to 1998. During his time in the NHL, he recorded 468 goals, 545 assists, and 1,013 points in 865 games played. He was known for his scoring ability, as well as his skill as a playmaker. LaFontaine was a seven-time All-Star, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003. He also represented the United States in international competition, including the Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey.

LaFontaine's career was cut short due to multiple concussions, which forced him to retire at the age of 33. In his post-playing career, he has become an advocate for brain injury awareness and prevention, particularly in sports. He has also been involved in various charitable causes, including the creation of the Companions in Courage Foundation, which builds interactive playrooms in children's hospitals across North America.
