Peter Laviolette was born on December 7th, 1964, in Franklin, Massachusetts. Laviolette showed a keen interest in hockey from an early age and began his career as a player in the NCAA Division I hockey league. He played for Westfield State College and earned a reputation as a strong centerman. In 1997, Laviolette became an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins and helped the team reach the playoffs in his first year. Laviolette moved on to coach the New York Islanders in 2001, leading the team to their first playoff appearance in eight years. After a brief stint with the Carolina Hurricanes, Laviolette was named head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2009. Under his leadership, the Flyers made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010, but were eventually defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks.
