Philipp Grubauer is an accomplished German ice hockey goaltender who has made a name for himself in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on November 25, 1991, in Rosenheim, Germany, Grubauer began his hockey career in the lower leagues of his homeland before moving to North America in 2010. He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, and he climbed up the ranks of the team's minor league affiliates until making his NHL debut in 2013.
Since then, Grubauer has established himself as a bonafide NHL goaltender with an impressive resume. He played for the Capitals for six seasons, averaging a save percentage of .923 and helping the team clinch the President's Trophy in 2016. He was also instrumental in the team's Stanley Cup playoff run in 2018, stepping up as the starting goaltender when the team's usual starter, Braden Holtby, struggled early in the postseason. Grubauer's sterling performance earned him a spot on the NHL All-Star Game roster in 2018 as well.
In June 2018, Grubauer was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he continues to shine. He posted a career-high save percentage of .923 in the 2019-20 season and helped the team reach the second round of the playoffs.
