Martinek's NHL career began in 2001 when he was drafted by the New York Islanders in the eighth round of the NHL Entry Draft. He played as a defenseman and quickly developed a reputation for his solid defensive skills and work ethic. Martinek played for the Islanders for ten seasons and became a fan favorite for his tenacity, leadership, and consistency. In 2011, Radek signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets where he played for two seasons before returning to the Islanders, where he eventually retired in 2014.

During his career, Martinek also represented the Czech Republic in international competitions. He won a gold medal at the 2005 IIHF World Championships and played in the 2006 Winter Olympics. Despite his retirement from professional hockey, Martinek remains involved in the sport, serving as an assistant coach for HC Ceske Budejovice, a team he started his career with.
