Backstrom began his NHL career in the 1957-1958 season with the Montreal Canadiens, where he played center for 13 seasons. He was known for his speed, skill, and playmaking abilities on the ice, and helped lead the Canadiens to six Stanley Cup victories during his time with the team. In 1964, Backstrom won the ultimate individual honour when he was awarded the Calder Trophy for his outstanding rookie season. Despite his success with the Canadiens, Backstrom was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1971, where he played for three seasons before ultimately retiring in 1973.

After his retirement from hockey, Backstrom remained involved in the sport by coaching and scouting for several NHL teams. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980 and later the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
