Red Kelly Autographs
Leonard Patrick "Red" Kelly was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, and coach, who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for several teams from 1947 to 1967. Born on July 9, 1927, in Simcoe, Ontario, Kelly started his hockey career with the St. Michael's Majors of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). He soon moved to play for the Detroit Red Wings, where he earned four Stanley Cup championship titles in 1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955.
During his 20-year-long NHL career, Kelly played in 1,316 games, scored 281 goals, and 542 assists, for a total of 823 points. Renowned for his two-way style of play, Kelly won the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman four times and was selected to play in eight NHL All-Star games. He played for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Los Angeles Kings. In 1967, the year of his retirement, Kelly played his final game before an emotional crowd in Maple Leaf Gardens.
After his playing career, Red Kelly served as a coach for several NHL teams, including the Los Angeles Kings, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He coached the Leafs to a Clarence S. Campbell Bowl in 1969-70 and a Norris Division championship in 1977-78. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player in 1969 and as a builder in 1999. In his final years, Kelly was respected as a community leader and ran for political office in Canada. He passed away on May 2, 2019, at the age of 91.
