Rich Preston is a retired professional hockey player and coach who was born on November 2, 1952, in Coquitlam, British Columbia. He started his hockey career as a junior player with the Humboldt Broncos in 1970. He then moved on to play for the Kamloops Chiefs and the Victoria Cougars in the Western Hockey League (WHL) before being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round, 86th overall in the 1972 NHL Entry Draft. Throughout his career, Preston was known for his offensive ability and leadership on the ice. He was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks during their 1977-78 and 1979-80 playoff runs, and played for Team Canada in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. As a coach, he was recognized for his ability to develop young talent and was instrumental in developing young players, including future NHL stars like Jeremy Roenick and Mark Recchi. Today, Preston continues to be involved in the sport: he has served as a color commentator for TV broadcasts of NHL games, and is currently a scout for the Carolina Hurricanes.
