Bowness has a remarkable career as a coach that spans over four decades. He started his coaching journey in 1984 as an assistant coach for the Winnipeg Jets but later moved on to coach other teams in different leagues, including the International Hockey League (IHL), the AHL, and the NHL. Bowness served as an assistant coach for several NHL teams, including the Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, and Tampa Bay Lightning, before becoming a head coach for the first time in 1992 when he was hired by the expansion Ottawa Senators. He has since coached several other NHL teams, including the New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes, and Dallas Stars.

Throughout his coaching career, Bowness has been recognized for his expertise and dedication to the sport. He was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best coach in 1989 while coaching the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Bowness has also coached in two NHL All-Star games and has led teams to several playoffs, including a Western Conference Championship with the Vancouver Canucks in 2011. His extensive knowledge of the game has earned him a reputation as one of the brightest minds in hockey coaching, making him a highly sought-after coach in the NHL.
