In 1976, Rick Green was drafted by the Washington Capitals, where he played for seven seasons, from 1976 to 1983. Green was known for being a solid defender, earning him the nickname "The Rock." In 1983, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens, where he won a Stanley Cup in his first season. During his six seasons with the Canadiens, he established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in the league and played a vital role in securing the team's success.

In 1989, Rick Green was signed by the Detroit Red Wings and played for one season before announcing his retirement from hockey. Over his career, he played in 845 regular-season games, scoring 52 goals and 194 assists, and recorded 759 penalty minutes. In addition to his Stanley Cup win in Montreal, he was also a member of the Canadian team that won the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1977. After his retirement, Rick Green worked as a coach for several years before stepping away from hockey entirely. He remains a beloved figure in Canadian hockey, remembered not only for his skill as a player but for his sportsmanship and dedication to the game.
