Tocchet's greatest success on the ice came during his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early 1990s. He helped lead the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and 1992, and was an integral part of the Penguins' high-scoring offense. During his time with the Penguins, Tocchet played alongside some of the greatest players in NHL history, including Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr. Tocchet retired from active play in 2002 with 952 points (440 goals, 512 assists) in 1,144 regular-season games.

Since leaving the ice, Tocchet has become a well-known coach and analyst. He began his coaching career in 2002 as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche, and later moved on to work with the Phoenix Coyotes (now Arizona Coyotes) and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tocchet has also worked as a commentator and analyst for a number of hockey broadcasts, including NHL Network and ESPN. He is widely respected in the hockey community for his knowledge of the game and his ability to develop young players into top talent.
