Rick Vaive is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who was born on May 14, 1959, in Ottawa, Ontario. Vaive started his hockey career in 1978 when he was drafted fifth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Entry Draft. He played for several teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Buffalo Sabres, and had his most successful years with the Maple Leafs. Vaive played as a right-winger and was known for his scoring ability and physical play. During his 12-year playing career, he scored a total of 441 goals and 347 assists in 876 regular-season games. Vaive's time with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1980 to 1987 was the most successful period of his career. He scored over 50 goals in three consecutive seasons, a feat that only two other NHL players had accomplished before him. He also helped lead the Maple Leafs to the playoffs in five of the seven seasons he played with them. Despite his success on the ice, Vaive was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1987, where he spent two seasons before being traded once more to the Buffalo Sabres.
