After being drafted first overall by the Colorado Rockies in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, Ramage went on to have a successful career in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for several teams, including the St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, and Tampa Bay Lightning, before retiring in 1994. During his career, he was named the captain of the St. Louis Blues, where he played from 1985-1989.

Rob Ramage was a two-time NHL All-Star and won the Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in the 1988-89 season. In total, he played 1,044 games in the NHL, scored 139 goals, and recorded 522 points. After retiring from playing, Ramage pursued a career in coaching. He coached the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League and the Sudbury Wolves of the same league.
