Roger Neilson Autographs
Roger Neilson was a successful Canadian ice hockey coach born on June 16, 1934, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He started his hockey career in minor leagues before being hired as an assistant coach by the NHL's St. Louis Blues in 1967. In 1977, he served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he was promoted to head coach the following year, leading the team to a Conference Final in his inaugural season. However, his most noteworthy tenure was with the Vancouver Canucks, where he coached from 1982 to 1984 and then again from 1990 to 1992.
Neilson's legacy in the game of hockey is his innovative coaching style, including the use of video technology, which he introduced to the game in the 1970s. He also encouraged the practice of studying one's own team on film and analyzing the opposition, revolutionizing the way teams prepared for games. Neilson further cemented his place in hockey history during the 1982 playoffs when he donned a white towel on a stick in response to a questionable officiating call, beginning the tradition of "towel power" that Canucks fans still carry on today. Neilson won the Jack Adams Award in 1982 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002, recognizing his lasting impact on the sport.
Roger Neilson's NHL coaching career lasted 16 years, earning him a reputation for his positive attitude, unwavering dedication, and passion for the game. He coached five NHL teams in his career, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and the New York Rangers, among others. Neilson was diagnosed with cancer in April 2001 and sadly passed away that June.
