Roman Cechmanek was a professional ice hockey player born in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia (now known as Zlín, Czech Republic) on March 2, 1971. At a young age, Cechmanek started playing for local hockey clubs such as HC Gottwaldov and HC Zlin before moving on to play for his country in various international tournaments. In 1995, Cechmanek was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 6th round of the NHL Entry Draft, eventually making his way to America to begin his professional hockey career. The Czech goaltender quickly made a name for himself in the NHL, earning the nickname "Lord of the Crease" for his dominant performances in net. Playing for the Flyers between 2000-2003, Cechmanek had an impressive record, racking up 110 wins in 184 games played, a goals-against average of 1.96, and a save percentage of .923. He was also a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist and a three-time NHL All-Star. In 2003, Cechmanek was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, where he played one final year before retiring from professional hockey in 2005.

In addition to his success in the NHL, Cechmanek represented the Czech Republic in numerous international tournaments. He won a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy and a bronze medal in the 2001 IIHF World Championships. In his home country, Cechmanek was named Best Goalkeeper at the 1999 and 2001 Czech Extraliga All-Star Games, solidifying his reputation as a talented and accomplished goaltender.
