Sergei Gonchar Autographs
Sergei Gonchar is a retired Russian professional ice hockey player. He was born on April 13, 1974, in Chelyabinsk, Soviet Union. Gonchar started his hockey career at an early age and played his junior hockey in Russia. He made his professional debut for Traktor Chelyabinsk in 1991, at the age of just 17.
Gonchar moved to North America in 1994, where he was drafted into the NHL by the Washington Capitals in the first round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He quickly established himself as an offensive defenseman, and during his ten seasons with the Capitals, Gonchar recorded over 500 points. He was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 2002 and played in four All-Star games during his tenure with the Capitals.
In 2005, Gonchar signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he continued to excel as an offensive defenseman. He helped the team reach the Stanley Cup finals in 2008, where they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. Two years later, Gonchar signed with the Ottawa Senators and played there for four seasons. He finished his NHL career with the Dallas Stars in 2015. Gonchar represented Russia in many international tournaments, including the Olympics, and won a Silver Medal in 1998, and a Bronze Medal in 2002. Over his 20-year NHL career, Gonchar scored 220 goals and recorded 811 points in 1,301 games.
