Stan Smyl Autographs
Stan Smyl was born on New Year's Eve, 1958, in the small town of Glendon, Alberta. From a young age, he showed an incredible talent for hockey, and by the age of 16, he was already playing for the New Westminster Bruins in the Western Hockey League. Smyl's career with the Bruins was nothing short of remarkable: he scored 58 points in his first season and went on to become the team's captain and one of the top scorers in the league.
In 1980, Smyl was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks, where he would spend the next 13 seasons. During his tenure with the Canucks, Smyl became known for his gritty play and tireless work ethic, earning him the nickname "Stosh" from his teammates. He scored a career-high 88 points in the 1982-83 season and was the team's captain for eight years. In 1991, Smyl retired from the Canucks and had his number 12 jersey retired in his honor, becoming the second player in franchise history to receive such an honor.
Smyl's hockey career didn't end with his retirement from the NHL, however. He went on to coach in the WHL, working with teams in Seattle and Calgary before returning to Vancouver as a coach for the Canucks' AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. In 2008, Smyl was named the Canucks' director of player development, a position he still holds today. With over 30 years of experience in the game, Smyl is widely regarded as one of the most respected figures in hockey, both in Vancouver and throughout the league.
