Steve Konowalchuk Autographs
Steve Konowalchuk was born on November 11, 1972, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in Seattle, Washington, where he began his hockey career with the Seattle Breakers of the Western Hockey League in 1988. After three seasons with the Breakers, he was drafted in the third round, 58th overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Capitals in the 1991-92 season and spent the next 10 seasons with the team.
Konowalchuk was known for his versatility and hardworking style of play. He was a reliable two-way forward who could play any position and contributed in all aspects of the game. He was a key player for the Capitals during his tenure with the team and was named captain in 2000. He scored a career-high 30 goals and 62 points during the 1997-98 season, and his leadership and work ethic earned him the team's "Unsung Hero" award in 1999 and 2000.
In 2003, Konowalchuk was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he played for two seasons before retiring in 2006 due to a heart condition. Over his 14-year NHL career, he played in 790 games, scored 171 goals and 225 assists for 396 points. He also played in 52 playoff games and recorded 11 points. Following his retirement, Konowalchuk went on to coach in the WHL and NHL, including a stint as the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2016-17.
