Steve Shields is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who was born on July 19, 1972, in Toronto, Ontario. He had a successful career in the National Hockey League (NHL) and was known for his exceptional qualities such as quick reflexes, excellent positioning, and focus. Shields played for several teams including the Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Over the course of his 13-year NHL career, he played in 168 games, recorded 2.54 goals-against-average (GAA), and a save percentage of .906.
Shields' journey to the NHL started with playing junior hockey for the Detroit Whalers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He was then drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the fifth round of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Shields made his professional debut in the American Hockey League (AHL) before eventually joining the Sabres’ starting lineup in the 1997-1998 season. While in Buffalo, he was known for his consistent performance and helped the team reach the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. Shields was traded to the San Jose Sharks in 2001 and went on to have a career-high 33 wins in the 2003-2004 season with the team. He would then play with the Boston Bruins and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim before retiring in 2007.
In addition to his NHL career, Shields is well-known for his charitable efforts towards the fight against cystic fibrosis (CF). He established the 'Steve Shields Shoot for a Cure' program in 2003, which not only raises funds for CF research but also brings hope to families and individuals living with the disease. The program includes activities such as auctions and a charity hockey tournament that has raised over $2 million to support CF research. Shields was the recipient of the AHL's "Yanick Dupre Memorial" Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to charitable activities during his playing career.
