Syl Apps Autograph

Syl Apps was a Canadian ice hockey player recognized for his tremendous skill and contributions to the sport. Born on January 18, 1915, in Paris, Ontario, Apps began playing the game when he was in high school. He was a multi-talented athlete, also excelling in track and field and football, but it was his proficiency in hockey that earned him national recognition. In 1932, he started playing for the Dunnville Mudcats of the Ontario Hockey Association, leading them to several victories and eventually moved on to play for the Memorial Cup-winning Stratford Midgets. In 1936, Apps signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, which was the beginning of his exceptional career in the National Hockey League (NHL). His skills as a forward and his leadership qualities enabled him to become the captain of the Maple Leafs. Apps played in the NHL for more than a decade between 1936 and 1948, scoring a total of 201 goals and 432 assists in 423 games. He played in five All-Star games and led the Leafs to three Stanley Cup championships in 1942, 1945, and 1947. During his time in the NHL, Apps not only endeared himself with his team’s fans but also to the entire hockey community.

Apps retired from playing hockey in 1948, but his contribution to the sport did not end there. He became a coach for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and later for the Pittsburgh Hornets in the American Hockey League. In addition to his hockey career, Apps also served as a Member of Parliament for the Progressive Conservatives, representing the Kingston and the Islands constituency in Ontario for ten years from 1963 to 1971. Syl Apps had an exceptional career as a hockey player, evident from his numerous accolades, which included being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.
