Brodie started his professional career in 2010 when he was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the fourth round (114th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft. He played for the Flames' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat, before making his NHL debut in November 2010. Over the next ten years, Brodie became an integral part of the Flames' defense, playing in over 600 games for the team. He recorded 48 goals and 266 points during his time in Calgary and was known for his intelligent play, skating ability, and strong defensive contributions.

In October 2020, Brodie signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He quickly became a fan favorite for the Leafs, with his calmness and consistency on the blue line being highly valued by the team. Brodie continued to prove his worth throughout the 2020-21 season, recording 2 goals and 14 assists in 56 games. With his solid performance, Brodie helped lead the Leafs to the playoffs for the first time in four years.
